咳嗽是呼吸道疾病的常见症状，是人体的一种保护性反射动作，能将呼吸道内异物或分泌物排出体外。但咳嗽也是病理性的反应，当鼻、咽喉、支气管、肺及胸膜等脏器受到炎症、淤血、物理、化学或过敏等刺激时，就会引起咳嗽。剧烈咳嗽常给病人造成极大痛苦。因此对于咳嗽应予以积极的治疗。
西药止咳药常用的有以下几种：
1.可待因：止咳作用迅速而强大，口服后大约1小时就可发挥最大效果。适用于各种原因引起的剧烈干咳和刺激性咳嗽，尤其适用于伴有胸痛的剧烈干咳。但不可长期使用，因其可产生耐受性和成瘾性，也可引起便秘。
2.咳必清：常用于急性上呼吸道炎症引起的频繁咳嗽和百日咳，有局部麻醉的作用。无成瘾性，使用较安全，不适用于多痰患者，否则易引起积痰过多，加剧病情。一次服药作用可持续4~6小时，青光眼病人慎用。
3.咳平：可抑制咳嗽中枢，止咳作用较可待因弱，无耐受性及成瘾性。服药后20~30分钟就可见效，作用可持续3~4小时。用来治疗急性上呼吸道感染、慢性支气管炎和结核病所引起的咳嗽。
4.必嗽平：痰液溶解剂，使痰液变稀，容易咯出。同时作用于胃黏膜，反射性引起化痰作用。服后1个小时见效，作用可持续6~8小时。适用于急慢性支气管炎、哮喘、支气管扩张导致的气急等症。胃溃疡病人慎用。
